The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on Wednesday to attend the funeral of his late maternal grandmother, Joyce Bekker.
The department’s Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed to TshisaLIVE that the former Paralympian had been released for a few hours.
“I just received an update from the head of the centre that he received an application (from Oscar Pistorius’ family) to attend the funeral and they granted him permission to attend the funeral. I was told at about 13h20 that the funeral is finished and he is now back in prison to continue with his sentence‚” said Nxumalo.
Carl, Pistorius’s brother also confirmed that his brother was present at the service for their grandmother who had died last week.
There had been uncertainty if he would be granted permission to attend the service.
“The funeral service went well. It was a really beautiful service as it was a great celebration of her life well lived [and] I was really happy to see my brother‚” said Carl
Pistorius is currently serving a six-year jail sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and is imprisoned at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre.
